This last week has been a tough one. I woke up on Saturday the 10th for Isaac's bird hunt with a soar throat and a cough. By Sunday night I was running a high fever which has stayed with me for the entire week and counting. I went in on Thursday morning and was diagnosed with a viral infection that typically lasts about a week.
Monday and Tuesday I stayed home in bed all day. On Wednesday I tried to work a full shift and made it 6 hours before my fever got high and my co-workers told me to get lost. I slept three hours in the afternoon and then decided since it was my opening day I might as well take a bunch of medication and go sit in the spot where Isaac shot his bird. I was coughing a lot so I took some cough medicine with codeine and some Theraflu. When I got to my spot at the top of the hill the wind was howling up the valley to where I parked my truck but it was 80 degrees and sunny. I slammed my doors and walked the 50 yards to the woods and stepped on to the logging trail to my spot. I took around 30 steps around a little corner in the trail and was amazed to see a huge Tom walking towards me on the trail. I threw down my decoys and calls and pulled up my gun and shot just as he was turning to make a run for it. That was it, thankfully my season was over in a flash because I have continued to be sick through the rest of the season which ended last night. I was making a ton of noise when I came down from my truck and entered the woods which the Tom never heard because of the strong wind.
He is the biggest Tom I have ever shot, he weighed 26 pounds, had a 10 inch full beard and 1 and 1/4 inch very sharp spurs.
