This warm spring has made a lot of activities happen early this year. Normally we don't start looking for morel mushrooms until early to mid May. This year Isaac and some friends found the first morels of the year on April 11th while hiking up Decorah peak. Isaac and I started checking south facing stuff this week and we have found at least 2 dozen morels everytime we have gone out. Not the motherlode but enough to keep us happy.
Last night we hiked the south side of the park about a half mile from our house in the evening after dinner. Out of 100 elms checked we found mushrooms on maybe three trees. One big recently dead elm had these giant greys at the bottom. When I saw the first one under a leaf I thought I was seeing something else because of how dark it was and the huge size. I called Isaac up from the bottom of the hill once I saw the other big greys sticking up aroung the tree. That kid can move when properly motivated.
It rained last night and only got down to 58 degrees. Today is projected to hit 70 degrees. If it is done raining tonight this should trigger the mother lode of mushrooms to pop. I think we will hit some islands on the river tonight.
