I finally got off the gobbler snide on tax day with a 23.4 pound gobbler. The handsome tom was sporting a 9-inch beard and 1-inch spurs when he made the mistake of coming to close to James Brown. Will Hutchens told me the birds were coming out by the pond every evening and working their way down the field feeding on corn in the manure, and that is exactly what they did. I shot the bird from about 50-yards and then grabbed him for a little full contact wrestling. They are strong birds and can beat you up pretty good with their wings.
I last shot a turkey in April of 2004. In 2005 a goofball with issues stood in the field in front of my blind. In 2006 the same guy told two hunters to setup their blinds 40 yards from my blind. In 2007 I did not hunt and in 2008 the infamous "white car" scared my birds back up the hill.
Isaac sat with me for a while but decided it would be more fun to play with the kids at the farm house about 150 yards away. The turkeys are used to the kids and dog making a lot of noise by the farm so I just asked Isaac to keep the kids away from the creek and the pond where I was. The birds were completely unfazed by the din coming from the rollicking children.
